Your new furniture – Will it fit?

Before you order furniture, check out all the access areas in your home, from first entry doorway through to the room you are re-furnishing.

How to measure furniture

  • Decide on the exact location where your furniture will be placed
  • Measure the area where you want to put your furniture, taking into account any existing pieces of furniture
  • It may be useful to make a plan drawing including dimensions
  • Measure the width, height, and depth of the furniture you wish to order

This should minimise any problems and you will be able to tell whether your chosen furniture will fit.

What about the doorway?

  • You must ensure that all widths and diagonal depths of the furniture are less than your home’s entry dimensions
  • It always helps to check the diagonal depth on upholstery by placing a straight tape measure from the back of the frame to the front of the arm
  • Compare the measurements with your existing furniture.  This is an excellent way to determine if the new furniture will fit
  • Please note that the diagonal height should be less than the entryway
  • Measure width and height of all doorways, hallways, and stairways, including banisters and turns
  • Remember obstacles such as handles, radiators, and lights on walls and ceilings
